In the Direction of Hope

I am on my way.
Wait for me in the garden;
I will be there soon.
I’m not the fastest runner,
Lord knows that,
but these legs are moving.
I suppose I could blame my weary spirit for the slow speed.
I could blame the grief I’ve shoved into my pockets and
laid around my neck.
I could blame my own hesitation to hope,
a hesitation that clings like mud.
But I don’t know that Jesus cares about my speed.
So tell God when you see them—
I am on my way.
Wait for me in the garden.
I will be there soon.

Every week I meet with a small group of seminarian friends over Zoom. Together we survived our studies, and together we continue to support one another in life and ministry. I wanted to share with you about our meeting at the beginning of Holy Week, specifically our response to the question we end every meeting with, “How can we be praying for you in the week ahead?” For the first time ever, we all had the same prayer. It could have that we were reading too much news, or the struggles we each were facing in life felt piled on, but our prayer was that on Easter each of us would experience the spark of hope in the resurrection. Just a tiny spark of hope.

For whatever reason, you may be having a harder time getting to the tomb this year and believe. You may feel like the record needle is stuck, spinning on Good Friday. You may not be to the Easter scene yet, but your feet are moving, you are going at your own pace, and you will be there soon. Give yourself the same grace God gives you, and know that whenever you arrive the risen Christ will meet you there.

Blessings for the Journey
